Into every community’s life come a handful of people who make a real difference in each generation.  Colchester has been fortunate to have many of those people throughout the years.  Cathy Russi is one of them.

For over twenty-nine years Cathy has been a driving force in building Colchester’s Senior Center and serving our senior community.  Her energy and commitment has ensured that whether you go to elementary school, are a business owner or volunteer, or drop by the Senior Center or run into her at Town Hall, you’ve heard the words “positive aging.”  And, not only have you heard them, you understand that those words are a verb … a call to action.  She’s inspired, motivated, and some times just dragged others along to ensure that our seniors are provided services and activities.  Because of her vision and ability to build partnerships, Colchester’s Senior Center is known nationally for its intergenerational programs – programs bringing together seniors and children in a variety of activities, such as the Green Team.  The list is long.  From providing energy and renter’s assistance and Meals on Wheels, to the Golden Glow singing group and a variety of art programs, to WII bowling tournaments and ping pong, Colchester’s Senior Center continues to grow.

Now Cathy is retiring.  The Board of Selectman accepted, with immense regrets, Cathy’s retirement effective October 3rd.  Cathy is a Colchester treasure and will be greatly missed.  We have a variety of activities planned to thank Cathy and say “we’ll see you again soon.”  If you’re interested in participating, please call the Town Clerk’s office at 537-7215 or my office at 537-7223 for more information.

On another note, the Elderly Tax Relief Task Force (ETRTF) continues to move forward with their mission.  As has been reported previously, initial work was completed in the area where they knew they could make an immediate difference – in the deferral program.  That accomplished, they are moving on to the more challenging areas.  Under the leadership of Chair Rosemary Coyle and Vice-Chair Ron Goldstein, the task force is now addressing the possibility of outright grants and/or abatements of some type.  As a first step in the process, the Task Force will be holding a joint meeting with the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance on September 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall to discuss the financial implications of this type of program.  Please join us.
